Darton is one of the oldest villages in the Barnsley borough, recorded in the Domesday Book as Dertune, sitting a few miles north-west of the town centre where the River Dearne winds down the valley. Darton's Grade I church of All Saints is the village's treasure, a fine late-medieval church, rebuilt in the early sixteenth century by the monks of Monk Bretton, with a dated roof timber that fixes the work to 1517. The old parish gave its name to the wider district north-west of Barnsley, a farming community on the Dearne that the railway and the coal pits later drew into the industrial belt while leaving the church and its core intact.
